NIPSCO Sugar Creek Generation Plant
Overview
A large coordination effort between HIVOLT, NIPSCO, ARC American and the Sugar Creek plant took place to work out the schedule and scope of work that NIPSCO was requesting HIVOLT to execute. HIVOLT’s Project Manager lead the project during planning and execution. The scope began by U.S. Hydrovac hydro-excavating the new conduit route and ARC American installing the new steel conduit. With the assistance of the HIVOLT Control Techs, ARC then installed the new control cables in the new steel conduit that spanned from the generation plant to the NIPSCO control house.
Allison Farms was brought in after the excavation portion of the project to properly backfill and compact the hydro-excavated trench so that the site was returned to original specifications. Once all the cables were installed, the HIVOLT Control Techs began their work inside of the control house de-wiring the old equipment and wiring in the new equipment. Once that was completed, HIVOLT returned to the project in the fall of 2023 to complete the cut over from the old equipment to the new equipment and then assisted NIPSCO’s P&C Technicians with testing and checking out all new equipment during the Sugar Creeks Plant outage.
- HIVOLT was responsible for hydro-excavating over 300 feet of trench for new control cables that spanned from the generation plant to the NIPSCO control building.
- HIVOLT was responsible for installing over 300 feet of steel conduit and pulling in 9 new conductors in the steel conduit.
- The wiring scope consists of de-wiring and removing 2 existing relay panels in the old relay house. Install and wire 3 SEL relay panels. One contains a pair of SEL 487E relays for differential line protection from the Unit Breakers in the Gen Station Collector Yard to the 2 345 Breakers adjacent to the incoming G1 line. One contains 2 351S breaker controls for the 345KV Breakers, and one is an ancillary panel for alarming and Engineering Access. The new cut in to be performed during the fall 2023 outage of Sugar Creek Gen Station.
- The project resources included an eight-man sub-contracting team to hydro-vac and install the steel conduit and new wire installation. A two-man team of HIVOLT’s P&C Control Techs to de-wire old equipment and wire new equipment. An additional remediation contractor was brought in to restore the site back to normal condition after the excavation activities.
